Surgical Considerations

Unlike some of the other procedures that describe one particular surgery, a mommy makeover refers to a collection of procedures that are designed to offset some of the changes a woman experiences through pregnancy. Typically, pregnancy stretches out the fascia of the internal wall in the tummy and it can cause stretch marks, breast sag or a loss of breast volume. Some women will have breasts that remain enlarged. Therefore, a mommy makeover usually includes some of the following: breast augmentation (breast implants), breast lift, breast reduction, tummy tuck, and/or liposuction. We believe that each procedure adds benefit, but together they are synergistic – the whole ends up greater than the sum of the parts.

Mommy Makeover FAQs

How Many Women Do This?

A lot! We have treated countless women with similar cosmetic problems all associated with pregnancy and nursing. The results are stunning and his patients love their new look and feel after surgery.

Will It Rid Stretch Marks?

There is unfortunately no known cure for stretch marks (or cellulite). However, stretch marks that exist due to a pregnant belly usually reside on the bottom of the abdomen. A tummy tuck removes this area of skin, including the stretch marks. Women who have stretch marks higher up will still have them, but they will be moved lower and stretched tight, usually making them less visible.

What About My Breasts?

Many women choose to get breast augmentation as part of their mommy makeover procedure. Dr. Decherd and Dr. Isakson are experienced cosmetic breast surgeons and strive to produce a result that looks natural and proportionate with the rest of the body. Women, mothers especially, should not feel anxious or worried about receiving implants after pregnancy. Many women both desire and deserve them especially after going through pregnancy.

Will Sagging Reoccur?

We firmly believe the biggest variables that cause sagging breasts are a massive weight loss, pregnancy, monthly menstrual cycles (which have some expansion/contraction element) and then lastly, gravity and time. So if a woman is not going to have anymore pregnancies, and is not going to lose a lot of weight, a breast lift (mastopexy) will reposition the breasts, which then will age with the woman reasonably well.

What About Pregnancy?

For optimal, lasting results, it is a general recommendation by cosmetic surgeons that women wait to have a mommy makeover until they are done having children. Additional pregnancies, weight gain and skin stretching could most likely compromise the results of the surgery.
