Loosing a significant amount of weight can be a major milestone in one’s life. Unfortunately, this frequently leaves behind stretched and sagging skin and muscle. Dr. Decherd can help patients in these situations complete their weight loss transformation by performing surgery that restores and tightens the skin and underlying muscle. Dr. Decherd is a board certified, plastic surgeon practicing in San Antonio, Texas who offers a number of skin removal and body tightening procedures. These include lower and upper body lifts, thigh lifts, arm lifts and tummy tuck surgeries. This type of surgery, typically recommended for patients who have lost 100 pounds or more, is especially common among bariatric weight loss patients. For best results, Dr. Decherd recommends patients be near their final goal weight and that their weight loss has stabilized before undergoing surgery.
"First Class! I highly recommend Dr. Decherd and his staff! I was referred to Dr. Decherd by a friend who had a breast augmentation. She was very pleased with the results, I am three weeks out from a tummy tuck, breast lift, and liposuction, and I feel great. Everything went very smoothly. He was very upfront and informative about the procedure and I knew exactly what to expect. He and His staff are very 'down to earth' and I felt very comfortable. All of the ladies at the front desk are very nice and welcoming. His nurse is also top notch. She has been very helpful! I am so excited about my results! It looks great! He did an awesome job!"- T.S. / Google / Oct 16, 2015
"I’m so glad that I went with Dr. Decherd for my tummy tuck! I had consultations with other doctors and I honestly left feeling bummed. I feel like all they wanted was to make everyone look “snatched” but that’s not what I was looking for. After 6 pregnancies and having 2 c sections I just wanted my hanging apron gone! Dr. Decherd understood what I was looking for and he delivered results I’m 100% happy with. His staff is amazing too! I’m definitely going back for other procedures in the future."- S.R. / Google / Sep 22, 2021
"Dr. Decherd and his team are the absolute best do not hesitate for a second! I did extensive research prior to getting my mommy makeover and I could not be happier with my results. My scars are so thin it’s truly unbelievable. I look better now than I did at 18. It is hard to believe I’m looking at the same body. Not only is Dr. Decherd’s work amazing, but Heather has been a rockstar pre and post surgery answering all my questions and responding to my needs even when it was after hours. Thank you for giving me my confidence back!"- B.B. / Google / Sep 21, 2021

"34 yr old mommy makeover- breast lift, 350cc low profile aug, tummy tuck, lipo of inner and outer thighs - After having my daughter, no matter how much time I spent in the gym, there were just some body parts that were not going back so I opted for a full mommy makeover. It included tummy tuck with limited lipo, lipo of inner and outer thighs, breast lift, and breast augmentation (natrelle silicon low profile 350 cc). My biggest fear was choosing the right breast size! I wanted upper pole volume but not a ton of projection. It's rather rare for women to opt for low profile but they were perfect for my needs. So ladies if you have a decent amount of breast issue that needs to be lifted and your not looking for a massive size increase but upper fullness and better shape don't be afraid of the low profile! My after picture is just 4 days post op so there is obviously some swelling and my breasts are high but I can already tell I'm going to love the results! Dr Decherd and his staff have been beyond amazing and my after picture speaks volumes about his amazing work. Some tips, rent yourself a recliner lift chair and walker! the lift chair is a game changer! It's comfortable to sleep in and made getting in and out of bed so much easier. Have HELP, I had my mom, dad and husband with me, believe me you will need help for everything the first 3-4 days. The first 4 days are no joke mainly due to the side affects of anesthesia, but by day 5 I felt like I made the turn and have been backing off the major pain meds and the nausea is gone. I go in for my first post op in 3 days. I can't wait to see my results over the coming months!"- B. / RealSelf / Aug 28, 2021
Weight loss patients will consider after weight loss surgery to correct or enhance one or more of the following conditions:
- Deflated and sagging breasts with nipples that point downward
- Loose and hanging skin on the abdomen
- Excess skin and pockets of fat on the hips
- Excess and deflated skin on and under the buttocks
- Loose and hanging skin around the knees and inner thighs
- Hanging skin on the underside of the arms (“bat wings”)
Loose and hanging skin on the neck (“turkey neck”)
The goal of after weight loss surgery is to reduce the amount of loose skin that collects and hangs on the body and to lift the body part, so it appears tighter. Multiple areas of the body may need to be addressed, depending on the needs of each patient. Most surgeons will group body parts together and stage them multiple surgeries. Doing so helps reduce the risk of complications, such as blood loss and infection. Examples of this grouping include:
- Upper body (Liposuction, breast lift, tummy tuck, arm lift)
- Lower body (Liposuction, butt lift, thigh lift, lower body lift)
After weight loss surgery is performed under general anesthesia in an accredited surgical facility. Patients are usually required to spend the night in the hospital so they can be monitored. The recovery following this surgery can be a slow process. While the post-surgical results can be life-changing for many weight loss patients, scarring is an unfortunate part of this process. Every attempt is made during surgery to minimize scarring as much as possible. Patients should adhere to a healthy lifestyle so that the results achieved through surgery are not compromised.

After Weight Loss FAQ's
Common Body Parts?
Common body parts that may need skin reduction surgery include the abdomen, buttocks, upper thighs, breasts, arms and neck. The breasts and abdomen are among two of the most popular areas addressed. A large majority of individuals will address the breasts (with a breast lift), and the tummy (with a tummy tuck) in a single surgery. As you lose weight, you will notice which areas are most concerning, and you can begin discussing cosmetic surgery with your plastic surgeon.
Most plastic surgeons require patients to be at or near their goal weight before moving forward with this surgery. However, this isn’t always the case. Sometimes, removing the loose skin is all it takes to accelerate the loss of the final pounds—especially if the loose skin is getting in the way of exercise and mobility.
Will Insurance Cover the Cost?
In most cases, no. Insurance companies consider this surgery to be cosmetic, and they usually do not cover any of the surgical expenses. However, each surgical case is different and may have a special circumstance. Our billing coordinator works to provide accurate estimates and thoroughly checks the benefits of each provider.
