Loosing a significant amount of weight can be a major milestone in one’s life. Unfortunately, this frequently leaves behind stretched and sagging skin and muscle. Dr. Decherd can help patients in these situations complete their weight loss transformation by performing surgery that restores and tightens the skin and underlying muscle. Dr. Decherd is a board certified, plastic surgeon practicing in San Antonio, Texas who offers a number of skin removal and body tightening procedures. These include lower and upper body lifts, thigh lifts, arm lifts and tummy tuck surgeries. This type of surgery, typically recommended for patients who have lost 100 pounds or more, is especially common among bariatric weight loss patients. For best results, Dr. Decherd recommends patients be near their final goal weight and that their weight loss has stabilized before undergoing surgery.
"First Class! I highly recommend Dr. Decherd and his staff! I was referred to Dr. Decherd by a friend who had a breast augmentation. She was very pleased with the results, I am three weeks out from a tummy tuck, breast lift, and liposuction, and I feel great. Everything went very smoothly. He was very upfront and informative about the procedure and I knew exactly what to expect. He and His staff are very 'down to earth' and I felt very comfortable. All of the ladies at the front desk are very nice and welcoming. His nurse is also top notch. She has been very helpful! I am so excited about my results! It looks great! He did an awesome job!"- T.S. / Google / Oct 16, 2015

"Dr. Decherd did an amazing job! I had been feeling miserable about my stomach. In 2013, I had my 9 1/2 pound baby via c section. I was left with a lot of loose skin. I only dreamt about having a tummy tuck until I actually started researching. I chose Dr. Decherd because he had amazing reviews and I loved all his results on his website. He explained everything to me so I understood the procedure. His staff was also very nice and helpful. I had a fantastic recovery! And I feel so confident and absolutely love my new body! Thank you Dr. Decherd! This was me at only 7 weeks post op!"- M.M. / Google / Jul 01, 2021
"Almost a year later, without a doubt, Dr. Decherd changed my life. After a 50 lb weight lost, and 30 lbs a couple years before that, my body was a wreck, an unrecoverable wreck. Dr. Decherd was recommended by my GP, and I can't thank her enough. With Dr. Decherd, you will find all the qualities you are looking for when considering plastic surgery. First, he is an ethical and decent human being. He is not there to upsale you, and get you to have surgery that really doesn't deliver the bang for the buck. Dr. Decherd is very careful to manage your expectations. I'm an older woman. He was honest about what my results would look like. I was not going to walk out of surgery looking like I was 24. But my results were better than I had hoped for. I looked the best I could imagine. Better than expected. Years of obesity were wiped away. I don't care what anyone says, I know, you cannot exercise away loose and saggy skin. I tried. I had a lot of procedures done. Dr. Decherd took time to evaluate me based on my age, general health, and giving me recovery information so we could come to a safe and mutual plan. His surgery center is in the same building as his office. It is immaculate, the staff well trained and caring, and I was well attended to. I had all the information I needed to know; what to expect during recovery. Before the surgery, I had all the meds I would need. The office and staff are very well run. They have their processes down. That makes a huge difference. You don't want to deal with people who don't care when you're having surgery. Everyone you talk to will care. I had the following surgeries, spread out over 3 surgeries, in 3 consecutive months. They were: tummy tuck and breast lift. Then lower face lift, neck lift, eyes, and skin reduction on my arms (you know, the wings?) Last surgery was skin reduction on my inner thighs. On the last surgery, I had a bit of revision to my eyes. It was no problem. What I loved, and had a hard time believing is, he cares that you are satisfied, really. The revision to my eyes was no problem, no extra cost. You also have lots of follow up visits to check your progress, and ask all the questions you will have about how your recovery is going. We all want instant results, and here is another instance of Dr. Decherd being very good at managing expectations. So it's been 9-1/2 months since the first surgery. I am having the time of my life with my new body. The most profound changes are my super flat stomach and the chin lift. Holy smokes, I wore a two piece bathing suit all this summer. (And I looked hot.) Honestly, it all came together. I feel confident wearing shorts, bathing suits, and clothes that accentuate, not hide, my body. My arms fit in blouses and my legs in pants. I can even go without a bra should I choose too. I don't have to try and adjust my chin and neck position trying to hid the layers of loose skin, when taking pictures. This is the first time in my life, since I was 15 y/o, that my body is not stopping me from joining in whatever activities and social situations I come into. This is freedom. Look at Dr. Decherd's before and after. That should convince you of his skills. Read the comments on this page. He is a talented and kind doctor."- R.L. / Google / Jun 26, 2021

Weight loss patients will consider after weight loss surgery to correct or enhance one or more of the following conditions:
- Deflated and sagging breasts with nipples that point downward
- Loose and hanging skin on the abdomen
- Excess skin and pockets of fat on the hips
- Excess and deflated skin on and under the buttocks
- Loose and hanging skin around the knees and inner thighs
- Hanging skin on the underside of the arms (“bat wings”)
Loose and hanging skin on the neck (“turkey neck”)
The goal of after weight loss surgery is to reduce the amount of loose skin that collects and hangs on the body and to lift the body part, so it appears tighter. Multiple areas of the body may need to be addressed, depending on the needs of each patient. Most surgeons will group body parts together and stage them multiple surgeries. Doing so helps reduce the risk of complications, such as blood loss and infection. Examples of this grouping include:
- Upper body (Liposuction, breast lift, tummy tuck, arm lift)
- Lower body (Liposuction, butt lift, thigh lift, lower body lift)
After weight loss surgery is performed under general anesthesia in an accredited surgical facility. Patients are usually required to spend the night in the hospital so they can be monitored. The recovery following this surgery can be a slow process. While the post-surgical results can be life-changing for many weight loss patients, scarring is an unfortunate part of this process. Every attempt is made during surgery to minimize scarring as much as possible. Patients should adhere to a healthy lifestyle so that the results achieved through surgery are not compromised.

After Weight Loss FAQ's
Common Body Parts?
Common body parts that may need skin reduction surgery include the abdomen, buttocks, upper thighs, breasts, arms and neck. The breasts and abdomen are among two of the most popular areas addressed. A large majority of individuals will address the breasts (with a breast lift), and the tummy (with a tummy tuck) in a single surgery. As you lose weight, you will notice which areas are most concerning, and you can begin discussing cosmetic surgery with your plastic surgeon.
Most plastic surgeons require patients to be at or near their goal weight before moving forward with this surgery. However, this isn’t always the case. Sometimes, removing the loose skin is all it takes to accelerate the loss of the final pounds—especially if the loose skin is getting in the way of exercise and mobility.
Will Insurance Cover the Cost?
In most cases, no. Insurance companies consider this surgery to be cosmetic, and they usually do not cover any of the surgical expenses. However, each surgical case is different and may have a special circumstance. Our billing coordinator works to provide accurate estimates and thoroughly checks the benefits of each provider.
