San Antonio plastic surgeon, Dr. Michael Decherd, offers brow lift surgery for patients desiring a more youthful appearance. This facial surgery focuses on correcting droopy eyelids that cause individuals to look tired or sad. During this procedure, the excess skin and tissue that causes drooping is removed and the eyebrow is lifted (with an incision along the browline) to create a more alert look. Brow lifts are often confused with a forehead lift. Both create similar results, but use different approaches. During a forehead lift, the incision is made endoscopically and the forehead will be pulled up, which lifts the brow at the same time.

Surgical Technique

Dr. Decherd utilizes several approaches for brow lift surgery. The incision point depends on the severity of sagging and the overall condition of the skin. Using an eyebrow incision approach, the incision is placed along the natural upper eyelid crease or the brow’s hairline. Once the incision is made, excess skin is trimmed away and the eyebrow and eyelid are pulled up to create an awakened look. Endoscopy is also very popular today for brow lift surgery. During an endoscopy procedure, several small incisions are made close to the hairline and a tiny camera is inserted so that the underlying tissue can be manipulated with precision. The healing from the endoscopic technique is quicker compared to the traditional brow lift approach.

Brow Lift FAQs

What's Surgery Like?

Dr. Decherd performs all brow lift surgeries in an accredited surgical facility. The average procedure time is between 1 and 2 hours. Patients will be placed under general anesthesia and will spend a couple of hours in recovery before being released home. There will be some bruising and swelling around the forehead and eyes, but this usually subsides within a week. Patients may feel as though the face is out of symmetry or that their eyebrows are high. As the eyebrows take on their new position, the results become more natural. It takes about 3-4 months for the final results to show themselves.

Facelift VS Brow Lift?

Sometimes, a brow lift is all a patient requires to attain a rejuvenated, awakened appearance. Patients that have sagging skin and drooping throughout the entire face may need a full facelift or a combination of facial procedures. Typically, a brow lift or forehead lift addresses the upper face, a cheek lift addresses the mid-face, and a facelift targets the entire face. Dr. Decherd will assess the facial laxity during the consultation and determine if a brow lift alone will garner the desired results and create a treatment plan accordingly.

Will I Look Fake?

The goal of a brow lift is to give the patient a look that no longer appears tired. The results should be subtle and natural. This can be achieved under the hands of an experienced facial surgeon. Pulling the brow too high or too tight can create undesirable results such as a “wide-eyed” appearance. Dr. Decherd, an experienced facial surgeon, will have a thorough understanding of the internal structure of the face and will create results that are natural and prevent a wide-eyed or hyper-alert look.

Can't I Just Get BOTOX®?

Countless patients come to our office for BOTOX and love the results this injectable treatment provides. It is a nonsurgical cosmetic treatment that targets forehead wrinkles. Dr. Decherd will oftentimes try a less aggressive approach first with a BOTOX injection. If the results are too subtle, a brow lift may be the right answer. While BOTOX does a great job of smoothing out lines and wrinkles on the forehead, it does not always correct drooping eyebrows. Many patients benefit from a combination approach using BOTOX and surgery to achieve the best outcome.

Does This Scar?

Scarring with a brow lift procedure is minimal. This is because the incisions are usually made along the natural hairline (either in the brow or along the forehead). In addition, Dr. Decherd strives to create incisions that are carefully placed to minimize the effects of scarring.
