Surgical Technique
A good breast reduction doesn't just reduce the volume of the breasts, it lifts and reshapes them so they're "perkier" as well as smaller. We typically use an inverted "T" or anchor incision, which encircles the areola, descends vertically down the lower pole of the breast, and then horizontally in the inframammary crease. The result is an incision that resembles an anchor. Once he removes the excess skin and breast tissue, the nipple and areola are repositioned higher on the chest and then the breast is reshaped to achieve a more youthful appearance. Breast reduction surgery usually involves a reduction of the areola diameter as well. Sometimes, if it's necessary, liposuction is used to remove excess fat from the area between the breast and the armpit.

Reduction Or A Lift?
Many women are unsure about whether they want or need a breast reduction or a breast lift. A breast reduction (reduction mammoplasty) and a breast lift are almost always related. The primary difference is that a breast lift removes skin, but little breast tissue. A breast reduction is similar, but removes much more breast tissue. All breast reductions have a lift as part of the procedure.
How Bad Is The Scarring?
With breast reduction surgery there is always some noticeable scarring, but over time the scars fade. Many women worry about scarring with a breast reduction, but afterward they usually feel that the physical benefits of the reduction, along with a more youthful appearance, are a fair tradeoff for any scarring. Most women find the scarring secondary to their new breast shape.
How Is The Recovery?
Breast reduction is an outpatient procedure. Patients will be sore and slow moving for the first day or so, but then should be able to get around without a problem. For the first several weeks, our staff will recommend that the patient wear a compression bra to protect the breasts. Patients may resume normal activities within the week, but should avoid exercise for about 4-6 weeks. Results are visible immediately after the surgery, but it does take several months for the breast to take on a normal, final appearance. Nipple sensitivity will slowly return within the first year.
